Death at home (from natural causes)
Immediately call your doctor or, if he or she is unavailable, the emergency medical service or an ambulance (118) to confirm the death. For deaths that occur without the presence of family members, the case of “death by violent or accidental death in a public place” falls within the category.
The doctor must still be called to fill out the ISTAT certificate stating the causes of death.
For those receiving home care from ANT (National Association for the Study and Treatment of Tumors), the verification can also be carried out by the ANT DOCTOR.
Interested parties must then, as soon as possible, contact an authorized Funeral Agency or Company to carry out further formalities (activation of the coroner to certify death after 15 hours from death and completion of the relevant certificate – delivery of the aforementioned certificate to the Civil Status Officer – possible conservative maintenance injection – funeral). Funeral Agencies and Companies also provide, upon request, the sending of a nurse to dress the body.
The body usually remains at home until the funeral, except in cases, certified by the attending physician, of unsuitable homes and/or when there are hygienic-environmental reasons for which transport to the body observation depot is necessary.
The coroner’s visit and dressing, in this case, are carried out at the morgue.
Death in a Nursing Home
The procedures are the same as for deaths at home (natural causes) except for the following exceptions:
– the attending physician is understood to be the physician in charge of the Nursing Home.
– the body remains (generally) at the Nursing Home until the funeral, except for health and hygiene problems, in which case it is taken to the nearest Body Observation Deposit.
Death in Hospital
The Hospital Administration directly takes care of verifying the cause of death, reporting the death and the related certifications (including delivering them to the Civil Status Officer), as well as dressing the body.
Those interested must, as soon as possible, contact an authorized Funeral Agency or Company to arrange the funeral
The body usually remains at the Hospital Mortuary until the funeral.
Death by violent or accidental death or in a public place
It is necessary to promptly notify 112 (Carabinieri) or 113 (State Police), who will arrange for the 118 ambulance to transport the body to the Observation Depot.
Family members or their representatives can arrange for the funeral once all legal obligations have been fulfilled (e.g. autopsy).
